The Ant and the Grasshopper

After finishing the poem "The Frog and the Nightangale" my english teacher asked all of us to write a poem on an incident that takes place between 2 animals(easy enough)..but the catch was that the poem HAD to be written in the style of "The Frog and the Nightangale" ie. in couplets...ok,I SUCK at rhyming, but at the end of one hour's hard work this is what i came up with..

Once upon a time,on a fine sunny day
An ant and a grasshopper met in a field of hay.
The grasshopper sang to a small guitar,
"Oh,Ant! What a foolish creature you are!!"
The grasshopper danced in great elation,
While the ant in deep concentration..
Worked hard,dug up the ground.
The grasshopper looked at her,and frowned.
All through the summer, the ant worked hard,
But the grasshopper sang or dozed beneath the stars.
The ant built her house, stored all her grain
While the grasshopper kept up a steady refrain
Told the ant "Come dance and sing,
I have one life to live, I'll live like a king."
Replied the ant"I've worked very hard,
When winter comes I'll play my trump card.
I'll have food to eat,a house to stay
And no worries at all,no rent to pay."
At this, the grasshopper hooted with laughter,
But failed to see what would come after.
One morning he woke to find snow on the ground.
He shivered and froze and frantically looked around.
Not a blade of grass,no food to be seen.
He cried in dismay "How could all be so mean??"
He was hungry and cold,he froze to the marrow.
Then luckily,he saw a little sparrow,
Who directed him to the house next door.
With great difficulty he crawled on the floor.
He looked inside, and what did he see?
The brave little ant, dancing with glee!
The room was cozy, she'd lit a fire,
He saw the flames go higher and higher..
He knocked on the door and begged for some food,
But the ant didn't seem to be in a great mood.
"What did you do,in summer all day?"
"I wasted my time in song and play."
The grasshopper wept and grovelled on the floor.
"NOW DANCE!!" said the ant and slammed the door.

woah.. i totally agree with shayeri... what a good poem !

and what completely baffles me is how you've managed to come up with such great rhyming without actually distorting the meaning ... i think hanging out with naman is helping us develop a poetic inclination (not to miss an inclination towards inventing unusual words)!!

chal yaar, have fun in lko (now i'm getting J ;-))
